All The Stories Are True! Shadowhunters – The Mortal Cup Review

Freeform’s (previously ABC Family) Shadowhunters has been a long time coming for The Mortal Instruments fans new and old and finally the time has come! The first episode The Mortal Cup aired last night in the United States and subsequently followed across the rest of the world today. If you haven’t seen it yet then what are you waiting for?

Clary Fray is thrown into the world of demon hunting after her mother is kidnapped, and must rely on the mysterious Jace and his fellow Shadowhunters Isabelle and Alec to navigate this new dark world. With her best friend Simon in tow, Clary must now live among faries, warlocks, vampires and werewolves to find answers that could help her find her mother.

There have been lots of sneak peeks for Shadowhunters over the last few months including a three minute preview which is exactly how the first episode starts, with Shadowhunters Jace Wayland, Isabelle and Alec Lightwood as they track a demon, in comes Clary Fray who Jace bumps into and to his surprise she can see him. The first episode definitely acted as a quick introduction to new fans of the series, to the characters and the Shadowhunter and Downworlder universe which meant in some parts the episode seemed very rushed but they had a lot of information to get into a 40 minute episode. The acting in places seemed a bit stiff but I believe this could be down to the actors figuring out their characters and how they want to play them.

Some of the changes that have been made to the show including Luke Garroway now being a police detective, was one of the few we already knew about. However there were a few somewhat unexpected changes which I didn’t see coming and I have to admit they threw me a little. Hopefully as the show goes on these changes will be explained more.

Overall I have great expectations for this show and I believe they will do their best to fulfill them. I can’t wait to see exactly what the show will do with the source material as well as any extra things they may add a long the way.

If you have watched episode one you can watch a preview for next weeks episode The Descent Into Hell Is Easy is below.
