9780957656970An Evening with Baddeley Brothers & The Gentle Author

This is a free event, but booking is essential: please ring 020 7839 4411 or email Join Waterstones for an evening with The Gentle Author and Charles Pertwee, who runs specialist printer Baddeley Brothers

Thursday 5th November – 18:30 at London – Trafalgar Square

About the book: BADDELEY BROTHERS chronicles the captivating story of a unique family business spanning six generations. Exquisitely produced, this clothbound hardback is not only a narrative of the Baddeleys and the evolving society in which they lived and worked in – it’s also a testament to Britain’s rich design heritage.
In the early 19th century there were Baddeleys working in the rural Hackney area of East London as engravers of plates for the printing trade, establishing a pattern of family industry in specialist printing that endures to this day. In 1885, a factory was built for the company at Moor Lane in the City of London, where Baddeley Brothers remained until its complete destruction during the Blitz of 1940. In recent years, the company finds itself back in Hackney, located just off Mare Street, still family owned by the Pertwees, who are direct relations to the original Baddeleys.

The Gentle Author (author of Spitalfields Life) gives a fascinating account of how one family created and continues to sustain one of the country’s foremost specialist printing companies, adapting to the digital age whilst preserving skills passed down through the generations.

Those who live in the Valley Farm development have secrets too: Annie and Sam’s daughter is due to be released from prison any day; Nigel watches, silently, every day, from his window. As Vera is drawn into the claustrophobic world of this increasingly strange community, she realizes that there may be deadly secrets trapped here …
