9780957656970An Evening with Baddeley Brothers & The Gentle Author

This is a free event, but booking is essential: please ring 020 7839 4411 or email trafalgarsq@waterstones.com Join Waterstones for an evening with The Gentle Author and Charles Pertwee, who runs specialist printer Baddeley Brothers

Thursday 5th November – 18:30 at London – Trafalgar Square

About the book: BADDELEY BROTHERS chronicles the captivating story of a unique family business spanning six generations. Exquisitely produced, this clothbound hardback is not only a narrative of the Baddeleys and the evolving society in which they lived and worked in – it’s also a testament to Britain’s rich design heritage.
In the early 19th century there were Baddeleys working in the rural Hackney area of East London as engravers of plates for the printing trade, establishing a pattern of family industry in specialist printing that endures to this day. In 1885, a factory was built for the company at Moor Lane in the City of London, where Baddeley Brothers remained until its complete destruction during the Blitz of 1940. In recent years, the company finds itself back in Hackney, located just off Mare Street, still family owned by the Pertwees, who are direct relations to the original Baddeleys.

The Gentle Author (author of Spitalfields Life) gives a fascinating account of how one family created and continues to sustain one of the country’s foremost specialist printing companies, adapting to the digital age whilst preserving skills passed down through the generations.

This is a novel about the hundreds of tiny connections between the public and private worlds and how they affect us all. It’s about the legacy of war and the end of innocence. It’s about how comedy and politics are battling it out and comedy might have won. It’s about how 140 characters can make fools of us all. It’s about living in a city where bankers need cinemas in their basements and others need food banks down the street. It is Jonathan Coe doing what he does best – showing us how we live now.

Michael Palin – scriptwriter, comedian, novelist, television presenter, actor and playwright – is set to publish a new diary, Travelling to Work, which carries all the Palin hallmarks of curiosity and a sense of adventure.

These diaries show a man grasping every opportunity, and they deal candidly with the doubts and setbacks along the way. The diaries open in September 1988 with Michael embarking on Around the World in 80 Days and cover the 10 richly diverse years which follow.

This book has all the vibrancy of the extraordinary man himself, and we are honoured to welcome him to Waterstones, to sign copies.

‘This case was different from anything Vera had ever worked before. Two bodies, connected but not lying together. And nothing made her feel as alive as murder.’ Life seems perfect in Valley Farm, a quiet community in Northumberland. Then a shocking discovery shatters the silence. The owners of a big country house have employed a house-sitter, a young ecologist named Patrick, to look after the place while they’re away. But Patrick is found dead by the side of the lane into the valley – a beautiful, lonely place to die. DI Vera Stanhope arrives on the scene, with her detectives Holly and Joe. When they look round the attic of the big house – where Patrick has a flat – she finds the body of a second man. All the two victims have in common is a fascination with moths – catching these beautiful, rare creatures. Those who live in the Valley Farm development have secrets too: Annie and Sam’s daughter is due to be released from prison any day; Nigel watches, silently, every day, from his window. As Vera is drawn into the claustrophobic world of this increasingly strange community, she realizes that there may be deadly secrets trapped here …
