The Girl Who Fell From the Sky Optioned by Relativity’s Specialty Division
Heidi W. Durrow’s debut novel The Girl Who Fell From the Sky has been optioned by Relativity Studios’ specialty division R2 and hired Marissa Jo Cerar to adapt the screenplay and executive produce the film. The film will be produced under the R2 banner run by Robbie Brenner, while Relativity’s creative executive Kevin McKeon will oversee the project for the main studio.
The Girl Who Fell from the Sky was inspired by a true story of a mother’s twisted love and explores issues of identity at a time when many have wondered whether race must confine and define us.
A bizarre mystery surrounding a family tragedy forms the centrepiece of this atmospheric story of a mixed-race girl’s struggle for identity. Orphaned and alone, young Rachel is taken under the wing of her strict African-American grandmother and moved to a mostly black community where her light brown skin, blue eyes, and astonishing beauty start to attract a troubling level of attention. As the terrible secrets begin to emerge, Rachel learns to swallow her grief and construct her own self-image in a world that wants to see her as either Black or White.
