Are Sherlock and Watson Going Back in Time in Sherlock Special?
We posted in January pictures from the Sherlock Special with leads Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman donning Victorian garb. The pictures lead fans to speculate whether the special would be set in the past, or if the pair were merely playing dress up. It has now been confirmed by co-creator Steven Moffat that Sherlock and Watson will be travelling back in time to Victorian London in the upcoming special but as a stand alone from the main series which is set to air early 2016.
“The special is its own thing,” Moffat said on Monday. “We wouldn’t have done the story we’re doing, and the way we’re doing it, if we didn’t have this special. It’s not part of the run of three episodes. So we had this to do it — as we could hardly conceal — it’s Victorian.”
Moffat alluded to the high stakes involved with the show’s fourth season at the 2014 Emmy Awards.
“We have a plan…we practically reduced our cast to tears by telling them about the plan,” he said to journalists in the press room when he went backstage after accepting the award for writing for a miniseries.
Filming has now wrapped on the special episode and Moffat is reportedly ‘very pleased’ with the final project. The BBC is yet to announce when it will air, but fans are hoping it will be a Christmas or New Year’s Day present.
