Johanna Basford’s Adult Colouring Books Take the World by Storm
Did you always think that colouring books were just for children, well you’d be wrong! Scottish illustrator, Johanna Basford, from Aberdeenshire has taken the publishing world by storm after selling more than one million copies of her colouring book for adults. Her debut title Secret Garden has been a particular hit in Paris. Basford started drawing the illustrations in 2013 as a way to relax and now creates intricate, whimsical illustrations for adults to colour in as they wish.
I’ve honestly never wanted to do anything else. My mum has a big cardboard box full of drawings and paintings I did as a child. I drew on everything growing up. – Johanna Basford
Following the success of her debut publication, Basford has made a follow up called Enchanted Forest: An Inky Quest & Colouring Book with 60 illustrations.
Every piece I create starts life as a simple pencil sketch, evolving into a rambling pen and ink drawing usually spanning several sheets of paper. I love the tactile nature of the materials I use and the joy of smudgy fingerprints. My delicate hand inked designs intend to charm and delight, inviting you to peer closer and discover the hidden intricacies. For me, computer generated graphics can feel cold and soulless whereas hand drawing captures a sense of energy and character which no pixel can ever replicate. – Johanna Basford
