Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Casts Male Leads
Late last night it was revealed that Downton Abbey star, Dan Stevens has been cast as the Beast while Hobbit and Dracula Untold actor, Luke Evans will take on Gaston, the dude with the over enlarged ego!
While it’s known that Evans is a pretty darn good singer and Stevens being the consumate British thesp can probably hold a tune, Watson divulged during the announcement of her casting that she was taking singing lessons. This leads us to believe this new version will indeed be a musical although nothing has been confirmed.
Beauty continues Disney’s plan of taking some of its animated classics and brushing them up for a 21st century live-action makeover. Cinderella, which also features mostly British leads, is the latest — it opens March 13 — and it’s generating great reviews.
Last year’s Maleficent was a live-action take on Sleeping Beauty and made $758.4 million worldwide.
Beauty and the Beast will be directed by Bill Condon (Breaking Dawn, Dreamgirls) with a screenplay by Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being a Wallflower). There is no release date at this time but filming is expected to start in the UK during the summer.
