Kate Beckinsale and Chloe Sevigny to Star in Adaptation of Jane Austen’s Lady Susan
Kate Beckinsale will play the lead role in Love & Friendship, an adaptation of Jane Austen’s posthumous novella Lady Susan, in which the main character is a beautiful widow in search of a husband for herself and a father for her daughter.
Lady Susan who has come to the estate of her in-laws to wait out rumors about her circulating through society, she decides to secure a husband for herself and her rather reluctant debutante daughter, Frederica.
Chloe Sevigny will play Lady Susan’s confidante Alicia, who lives vicariously through her friend’s affairs and manipulations of men.
The cast also includes Xavier Samuel (The Twilight Saga) as the object of Lady Susan’s affections, and Stephen Fry as Mr Johnson, long-suffering husband to Lady Susan’s friend and confidante Alicia.
Lady Susan is a selfish, attractive woman, who tries to trap the best possible husband while maintaining a relationship with a married man.
She subverts all the standards of the romantic novel: she has an active role, she’s not only beautiful but intelligent and witty, and her suitors are significantly younger than she is.
Although the ending includes a traditional reward for morality, Lady Susan herself is treated much more mildly than the adulteress in Mansfield Park, from Jane Austen’s novel Sense and Sensibility, who is severely punished.
