Happy Jane Austen Day!

Today is Jane Austen’s 239th birthday and for the past two centuries her seminal novels have been read and reread passionately by generations. More than that they have captured the imagination of the culture in a way few other authors’ works have. Like Shakespeare, Austen has had her work adapted into major motion pictures, sequels, TV series and so much more.

Austen’s novels are so recognizable and relatable that they have been repeatedly adapted as modern reimaginings though not all of them successfully.

Here are eight modern film reimaginings of Jane Austen novels:

Lost in Austen based on Pride and Prejudice
Amanda, an ardent Jane Austen fan, lives in present day London with her boyfriend Michael, until she finds she’s swapped places with Austen’s fictional creation Elizabeth Bennet.
scents and sense
Scents and Sensibility based on Sense and Sensibility
Two sisters find that they have to make their own way in the world after their father is jailed. Elinor is a cleaner in a spa. Marianne works for a marketing company but she also makes scented lotions, which turn out to be a real winner.
From Prada to Nada based on Sense and Sensibility
A Latina spin on Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility,” where two spoiled sisters who have been left penniless after their father’s sudden death are forced to move in with their estranged aunt in East Los Angeles.
The Lizzie Bennet Diaries based on Pride and Prejudice
A modern day retelling of Pride and Prejudice, the series is told in vlog-style by Lizzie Bennet as she narrates the trials and tribulations of her family life with the help of her best friend and aspiring filmmaker, Charlotte Lu, “practically perfect” older sister, Jane, and easily excitable younger sister, Lydia. As in Pride and Prejudice, Lizzie’s mother is all too eager to marry her and her sisters off to rich men, so when wealthy medical student Bing Lee moves into the neighborhood and manages to woo Jane, it changes the entire dynamic of the family. It isn’t long before Bing’s even more wealthy friend and heir to an entertainment corporation, the mysterious Darcy, makes his way into the Bennet sisters’ lives, too.

Metropolitan based on Mansfield Park
A group of young upper-class Manhattanites are blithely passing through the gala debutante season, when an unusual outsider joins them and stirs them up.
Bride and Prejudice based on Pride and Prejudice
Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice gets a Bollywood treatment.
Bridget Jones’ Diary based on Pride and Prejudice
A British woman is determined to improve herself while she looks for love in a year in which she keeps a personal diary.
Clueless based on Emma
